Wooster Christian third grade students salute Wooster's Bicentennial

with this special expression of blessing for the city.

The Wooster Christian third grade social studies classes of Hannah Heimberger studied the history of Wooster and Wayne County this spring quarter.  The curriculum plan was designed to coincide with the city’s Bicentennial celebration.

Initially, student groups researched about prominent historical figures from early Wayne County/Wooster days.  A History of Wayne County Kit available at the Wayne County Public Library and the Daily Record newspaper series, When Wooster Was a Whippersnapper, formed the basis of their research.  Each group composed newspaper articles about Wooster’s founders, with such notable titles as “The Apple Man,” “General Wooster’s Adventure,” and “The Life of the Larwills.”

The students then took a field trip to the Wayne County Historical Society.  This further enhanced their knowledge about Wooster history, especially when they saw a variety of local “artifacts.”   An authentic hat worn by John Larwill grabbed much attention from the third grade girls.

The culminating experience for the entire unit was a trolley tour on May 12, courtesy of the Wooster Bicentennial Committee and Main Street Wooster, Inc.  The students  actually saw and heard about Wooster’s history through the many sites along the route traveled by Woody, the Trolley, and described in detail by Tami Mosser, the Main Street guide.
