Right to Read Week

Wooster Christian fourth and fifth graders “booked many trips and were flying high” during Right to Read Week 2008 as they earned 5 travel miles for every page read.  Their combined miles totaled  67,247 or 13,449.4 pages read by 43 students.

Wooster Christian School celebrated Right to Read Week 2008 from March 3 – 7 with the theme, “Book a Trip”.  Students in all classrooms from kindergarten through eighth grade received reading passports to track the number of pages they read during the week.  Individual and classroom goals were set according to age level and number of students per class.  Each page read was worth 5 miles.  For every book read, paper airplanes were displayed on a hall mural labeled with the student’s name and book name.  Students were encouraged to get as many “planes in the air” as possible.

By the end of the special week, a total of 184,096 miles was traveled.  This translated into 36,819.2 pages read school wide or 227.3 pages per student.  Andria Zimmerman’s fourth grade class traveled 44,620 miles, earning first place honors at the elementary level.  Australia was their travel destination.  Joyce Atkins’ fifth graders earned 22,627 miles, taking first place in the middle school.  They chose to visit the capital city of Bangui, in the Central African Republic because a classmate, Valerie Harley, had gone on a mission trip to this location last year.

The culminating activity for this travel week was a visit by the Wayne County R/C Flyers Club.  Students were treated to displays of radio controlled planes and were able to take the controls on flight simulators to practice their flying skills.  These local hobbyists formed this group in 1969 and have 65 members from all walks of life, according to president, Edwin Hawk.
