Middle School Art
The WCS Art Curriculum is designed to develop each student's individual sense of creativity and self-expression through a well-rounded study of art, which includes history, theory, criticism, and hands-on application. Students are exposed to a wide variety of art forms and media, which are introduced in a historical context. Just a few of the processes covered during the year include drawing, oil pastels, acrylic painting, printmaking, collage, ceramics, and textile art. In the past, students have studied Frida Kahlo, Piet Mondrian, Georgia O'Keefe, Michelangelo, and a variety of contemporary artists as part of their art education.
At WCS, we view art as an opportunity to worship the Lord. Mrs. Bethany Lehman, our art instructor, believes that, "God is the ultimate artist." Unlike many schools, WCS celebrates the prevalence of Christian themes within the art world throughout history. Several projects contain spiritual emphasis.
Throughout the course of the year, students enjoy many opportunities to glorify God and experience a sense of personal accomplishment through their art via both formal and informal displays of their work on campus and throughout the community. As part of our annual Fine Arts Night, awards are given to recognize exceptional works. Students in grades 3 through 8 may participate in the regional ACSI Art Festival, an opportunity to appreciate works from students of other area Christian schools and be recognized for their own abilities. Year-end awards to outstanding artists are also given.
